St. Rose of Lima, Quincy, Illinois
The Traditional Latin Mass is coming in Quincy this fall, to the re-opened Saint Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church. I’ll be writing a lot more about that as things develop, but here are some pictures as the renovations begin. The church was basically gutted when it was closed a couple years ago, so we have to replace almost everything except the pews, and there’s a lot of cleaning to do.
First, some pictures from outside; click on them to see them full-sized. Please excuse my low-quality camera and even lower-quality photography skills.
Update, Oct 11, 2008: More pictures here…

Hello,
I know Fr. Devillers and you are very fortunate to get him. You are also immensely blessed with such a beautiful church. If I weren’t so happy at my Latin Mass apostolate in Indianapolis, I might be quite envious of Fr. Devillers’ good fortune. I know you’ll ultimately have a wonderful and beautiful church – more beautiful than it was originally, because you will realize how much the church and the Mass are worth. We’re at the end of our renovation/restoration at Holy Rosary in Indianapolis (a unified Extraordinary/Ordinary Form parish). I invite you and all in Quincy to check out our website. And I invite any and all of you to visit us at Holy Rosary. I hope I am fortunate enough to visit you someday – when I get some time off from Holy Rosary! God bless you all.

Fr. Magiera,
Thank you for the kind comments. We are indeed lucky to have St. Rose and Fr. Devillers. Some people have asked me how we managed to get a priest, when so many churches in this area have closed or are sharing a priest and desperately hanging onto one weekly Mass. I tell them they should have gotten the Latin Mass.
Melissa,
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed the pictures. I just put up some new ones Paul sent me from the first Sunday. If you’re who I think you are, you know first-hand how much work went into it!
God bless you both,
Aaron

Attending the first Latin High Mass was a wonderful experience. It was like things had never changed and was so natural. There is the most high reverence between Father and the servers, and this is what makes you keep coming back. I love it! Those who grew up during the Latin Mass will love it. There is something special about saying and singing in Latin. We are blessed to have Father here to keep these Latin memories alive.

Well, I have attended some of the masses in that most beautiful church, how rare is the moment to see so much beauty, so much reverence at mass again. I was talking to a lady after mass on Sunday, and she said they still wonder how Mr.Geers got this whole thing together, one person who started this and got so many people together. I found out he does not even live in Quincy! then I said , “why did he do this?” she said he loves the Latin Mass and that this was his home parish and was always the most beautiful church and wanted the Latin Mass there. She also said, that he only had one meeting with the local Bishop, and then he had to contact the Superior General of the Fraternity to come to Quincy. Mr. Geers, said it was alot of prayers that got this to Quincy and he was also praying to Msgr. Fox, a longtime former pastor there in helping him.
What great prayer, and Thank you Mr. Geers for thinking of Quincy. We need this!!

My fiance and I are currently scheduled to get married in this church this summer as she is originally from the Quincy area. I am from the Washington, MO area and would like to know if anyone has anymore interior pictures of this church. They pictures that are posted look great, but I’m looking for pictures that give me a sense of size inside as well as pictures of the alter.
Thanks for any responses and help!

Hi Brandon,
That’s great, I know people will be excited to hear a marriage will be taking place at St. Rose. There have already been three baptisms that I know of, too.
If you go to http://www.saintrosequincy.org, we have a photo gallery there now, with nearly all the pictures I have so far, but more should be coming.
Capacity-wise, I’ve been told it seats about 300, but I think you could squeeze more in than that. We had 240 at the first High Mass, and there was quite a bit of room left.

i love the pictures

Do you know if the couple planning on marrying in St. Rose are traditional Catholic?

No, I don’t, but I think you have to be a member to have a wedding there (but don’t quote me on that), so I kind of assume at least one of them is.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it

Dear Friends,
You do not need to be a member to get married in St. Rose of Lima, but we would like you to be a member there.
